Good to see you doing well. I just happened to stumble on my old blogger account and it gave me a chance to catch up on what my old friends have been doing. It's been a tough year since we lost our job. We're now living in a basement apartment, craziness! I miss my life out on the prairie. Chickens have always cheered me up. Much like what my cat did when his best cat friend died. I didn't know hens would eat crawfish either!! They've got good taste! I love it that they (new and old) are teaching each other new things! It helps if you are incorporating several hens, and that they are of similar feathering.

I've done a couple different ways. The first time I had to add a rooster and 4 Buff Orp hens, who were juveniles. I set up a separate pen inside the layer pen, and they were in there each day until no one had any interest in each other. Then I opened the gate and each flock invaded the other territory. They were so busy doing that, there was no trouble. (At night the 5 had been in the brooder enclosure for safety.)

For the past 2 years, when I add the new layer flock, the only one from the old flock is Ernie, our Barred Rock pet. So she's in HER layer pen (just ask her whose it is). And we add the new younger flock to it. This way she's boss.

The concern is she is a singleton. We always add breeds of similar coloring, so she won't be a coloring singleton. And when we select for the layer flock we make sure we have more than 1, preferably at least 3, of a coloring.

Because we cull more than we need for the layer flock, not all go to it. This disrupts the pecking order, and being in a new space with a boss, also does. So a new pecking order is established with Ernie at the top.

This works because Ernie isn't aggressive. If the one remaining were, there might be a problem.

This year, I had an injured hen who had been in the house for a couple weeks, long enough to make her a stranger to her flock. She was put in the layer pen at time of disruption, and was safe because of it.

Regarding Barred Rock foraging, this is why Ernie is the pet. She was constantly out of the pen, either foraging, or supervising work. You can't get near her, which is why she's survived all these years. Something almost got her once, as the feathers were gone from her back and neck, but no injuries.

The reason Amber's hens didn't lay was they could not find enough protein/necessary nutrients to support laying. Once they had complete nutrition from your pellets, they started.Pam R.https://www.blogger.com/profile/10198244361708075844noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7588065594023489285.post-73212352200844015132013-11-14T00:53:48.046-05:002013-11-14T00:53:48.046-05:00I found this very interesting. I've had chicken fights and bullied chickens and never knew what to do about it. Thanks for the tip! Those chickens look so contented.
