FIRST GRASS

Winter is officially over!!!

The herd went out to the first grid in the pasture this afternoon.     All the rain and sun from last week really made the grass grow.

It was the first time the calves ate and ran on grass.

The entire 50 acre field is set up in grids with a roll of hay in each to prevent bloat from the lush grass.
After about 5 or 6 days they will no longer need the hay.

It is always wonderful to watch the herd stampede out of the barnyard and into the field of green grass.  This year it is nothing short of a miracle that they all survived the winter.
And.... so far that porcupine prediction is still running true--- the cows are out to grass by May 1st.   Normally its around May 15th!

GrandSlam Kate also meandered out to the field.

She now has her license plates and is "field legal."

My pumpkins, squash, sunflowers and Scarlette O'Hara morning glories are ready to be transplanted.

As I drove around today, I saw that the famous round barn is now surrounded by the overflowing Connecticut River.

The river is starting to go down now, making some roads passable.
But the farm land will take weeks to dry out.

Back at the field, the calves were tormenting my cow dog.

Happy Birthday Mavis!

We have all survived the winter and made it to greener pastures!

  1. Happy Birthday, Mavis. GrandSlam Kate looks great. Let the sun shine on. It has been unseasonably cold here. The weather is so moody. I have a request of you. Would you write about the round barns?
