Vermont Castle

I see the strangest things when I drive around.

I did a double take when I was driving the other day.

I thought I saw a castle on a hill.

I turned around.to go look again.

Yep, its a castle.

I have no idea what the story is on this large structure.  There was nobody walking on this rural back road, so I had nobody to ask.  Darn.

I will find out somehow and add the info to this post.

This castle is in Fairlee Vermont.

If anyone has the inside scoop on this, please post the info in the comments.

Better yet, when I turned around to go get a photo of the castle I saw this near the road.

I do not know what this is a quote from or if it is a statement about the tree being cut down.

I got a photo of this nature center to help solve the mystery.

Click on the photo to see it much larger and figure out the meaning of the sign.

I'm stumped.

So there you go, 2 mysteries in one post.

Take the challenge and help find the answers.

  2. ..."and the tree was happy" would be from the book "The Giving Tree" (Shel Silverstein). One my mom read to us when we were young. Here's a link to the story http://the-giving-tree.info/

Off to google about that castle ...

  3. OK, I wonder if the castle was built by someone involved in "Carnage Noir" - an annual gaming convention held in Fairlee. Here's a link to an article ... http://www.bostonglobe.com/lifestyle/travel/2012/10/20/annual-carnage-gaming-convention-fairlee-all-fair-love-too-among-carnage-fans/dLDEbQf2issLvobmXJS7WI/story.html

  4. 2 mysteries in one drive is doing pretty good.
While I can't accurately tell the scale of the structure accurately, I would guess that the castle is an elaborate playhouse for some lucky kids. At 1st I thought it might be a castle style barn, but the large concrete step at the front door made that unlikely.
I googled the Hulbert Outdoor School and now know far more about the place than I need to. None of the sites mentioned the tree stump or the quote, so other than knowing it is in Fairlee, VT, I cannot solve the strange quote mystery. Must be an inside joke, but what tree would be "happy"to be cut down?
If I had been thinking straight, I should have written the phone # down and called to ask about the quote - but I wasn't. Do you know the answers?

  5. I'm back because I did solve the tree quote. It is from the Shel Silberstein book The Giving Tree. It is about a generous tree that, over time, gives away all of its' branches, apples, etc. happily to a boy. When the boy becomes a man he builds a house from the treee until there is nothing left but a stump...but the tree was happy...because the stump gave people a place to rest and sit awhile.
Thanks for the puzzle to solve.

  7. I love that tree photo. It's kind of morbid but I love it anyway. And that castle is random! I went to a weird little cemetery in Northern California a few weeks ago and found a random pyramid with a family buried inside. I had to google it to find out more. I guess it's only one of like four pyramid graves either in CA or the US (I forget which, I obviously learned a lot about it, ha!). Anyway, your mystery castle reminded me of that. :)

  10. The quote is from "The Giving Tree" by Shel Siverstein. It's a bittersweet story of a boy and a tree.
